TONY PORER MEMORIAL JUNIOR OPEN MATCH RESULTS - 7 SEPTEMBER 2024.
The seventh and final match in this year's series of junior open matches was fished at Halnaby Lake on a mild autumn day, and attracted 10 keen boys eager to win at least one of the series rather than it being a clean sweep for the girls. While several of the boys had only fished less than 5 times (and didn't have experienced parents to gide them) they were all keen and raring to go.
Once again the roach and perch were feeding well at the start, although some pegs seemed to dry-up within the first couple of hours.
Theo Nicholson got off to a good start on peg 27 but had to leave early after less than 3 hours because of a family wedding. He set the target weight at 4lbs 11ozs which included the heaviest perch of the day at 10ozs. Despite his early departure Theo finished in fourth place.
Henry Burns fished peg 36 and caught steadily throughout the match for 7lbs 14ozs of roach, perch and small skimmers, and probably thught that he ad won the match, until we came to weigh-in Rose Hutchinson fish on peg 32 (I think it was that peg).
Rose revealed that she had caught a carp (her first ever), which she had managed to keep quiet for quite a while. This weighed 10lbs 10ozs and gave her a total weight of 14lbs 5ozs. Earlier in the match she had been catching roach at about 4 metres, then switched to just off the front of the platform for perch. The bites soon ceased, probably because of carp moving in (she lost two). Aa switch to a number 10 elastic on a power top-2 allowed her to win the match, and the carp also gave her the Specimen Fish Shield.
In third place was Dexter Cairns , returning after a three-match absence recovering from a broken collar bone, with 5lbs 2ozs of roach and perch from peg 38.
Thomas Altoft fished peg 25, and had a few perch and roach on float before switching to feeder and small boillie which eventually brought him the heaviest bream of the day at 3lbs and a total weight of 4lbs 8ozs.
There was a three-way tie for sixth place, with Tom Howard,Sammy Macauley and Elijah Macauley all putting 2lbs 4ozs in the net.
Isaac Lupton had 1lbs 2ozs from peg 26, Hamish Barker had 15ozs from peg 23 and Kammy Ahmad had 10ozs from peg 22..
