News

The AGM will be held on Wednesday 9th December 2009 at 7:30 pm, at YAL headquarters.  Notices of motion must be received at the club (in writing) by 25th November 2009.

Otter-proof fencing at Halnaby

The ‘Otter proof’ fence has now been erected around Halnaby Lake.

For added security, the car park access gate at Halnaby will be locked– using the same combination type lock that is used on our river stretches .  For those who intend to fish at Halnaby, the access number will be available from the Club, Paul Richmond (07815 818030) and Richard Sidgwick (01642 790240). When phoning, members will need their YAL (and ATDAC) membership details to hand. After using the gate, always re-lock and ‘spin’ the numbers.   Members are also reminded that parking on the grass verge outside is not allowed.  Remaining fish stocks are being assessed but we have provisionally ordered Mirror and Common carp for restocking next spring.

Riverbank maintenance continues on an almost weekly basis and many fallen trees have had to be felled, sawn or trimmed and some are still to be done.  Several of the wooden platforms have had new plastic tops fitted and this will continue as and when they need replacing.  Combination locks, which are now welded to the chains, have once again been fitted to the gates at 165/166 and 160/161.  The wooden bridge at peg 193 has been repaired with new 2” thick boards and is now 9” wider than the original.

Turlwick  The car parking area at Turlwick has now been covered with hardcor.

Subscriptions

After 3 years without increases to membership subscriptions, it has been necessary to raise these for next year due solely to increasing costs. The new rates are shown on the membership fees page. The entry fee for new members remains unchanged, as does ATDAC membership.  Membership can be paid anytime from late December through until 30th September – but members cannot fish any of the club waters or enter any of the competitions until their subs have been paid – nor can they fish ATDAC waters if their membership (of ATDAC) is via YAL.

Juniors

The juniors again fished all their matches at Halnaby, and while weights were not as heavy as the previous year all the matches were keenly contested. Joe Trattles performed consistently to win 3 of the matches, with Jamie Moore winning the other. Ben Nash ran them very close, and clinched the Specimen Fish in the final match of the series. We encourage all junior members to get more involved, you don’t need to be a match angler to join in and be in with a chance of getting your name on one of the trophies. Browning Tackle also sponsored a match which was opened up to members from Thornaby, Stockton and Darlington Brown Trout and 11 juniors enjoyed a good day with plenty of prizes. We hope to be able to run this match again in 2010.

We are keen to develop the juniors section further, and Paul Richmond is about to train for a coaching qualification. Anyone interested in helping out with the juniors section, and to also gain the coaching qualification, please contact Paul on 07815 818030. If we can get a few more coaches we can then gain Clubmark status for the club, which will put us in a better position to establish links with local schools and to grow the membership from the “bottom up”.

National Championship

YAL competed in the Angling Trust National championships which this year was held on several Midland canals.  Considering that canal fishing is not one of our strengths, the team finished a respectable 41st (out of 69) and ensured that we have retained our Division 1 status.  On the individual front, congratulations must go to Peter Close who was second on the day and had it not been for one lost carp would have been Individual Champion.

Cancer Research charity match

The Cancer Research UK charity match held in June was again a huge success with over £660 being raised.  YAL have rounded up this donation to £700.  Thanks again to all those who supported this worthwhile cause.

Angling Trust

The ‘Angling Trust’ is now the governing voice of angling – taking over from the National Federation of Anglers, ACA etc - and now incorporates the interest of all disciplines of angling – Coarse, Game and Sea.  Whilst the Club is an affiliated member, the success of the AT is dependant upon anglers becoming individual members and the club supports the view that our members should consider becoming members so that the AT can continue to tackle such issues as pollution, predation and canoes. Enrolment forms are enclosed for those interested – or call AT direct on their membership line for details – 0844 7700616.

Yarm Lakes (Halnaby & Turlwick)

Fish are being harmed by people using barbed hooks. The rule book clearly states that barbless hooks only are to be used. Yarm officials will be making spot checks in the near future on this issue and action will be taken against any members found breaking this important rule.

General

When fishing Yarm A L waters members must carry the current year’s membership cards with them and must display the up to date Parking permit on their car windscreens if using and parking their cars on Yarm A L Car parks or road sections if used.

Email

We can save money on postage if we can email out the newsletter and other information. If you have an email address please email the club’s email address and you will be added to the circulation list. Yarm’s email is yarmaa@ntlworld.com.

Of course this only works if it is kept up to date so any changes throughout the year should also be emailed in to the Yarm email address.
