The fourth and final of the junior matches was held on Halnaby Lake on Sunday 14 October 2007, with the draw at 09:30 and fishing from 10:30 to 15:30. Five members fished the match and everyone weighed-in (follow this link to see details of the weights).

The conditions were overcast and calm, following a slightly warmer weather. Whilst conditions looked good it soon became clear that the roach were not in a feeding mood. So it was obvious that anyone getting even a bream or two would be in with a very good chance of winning. Newcomer Thomas Ibbotson stuck it out on the feeder to achieve his first win, with 2 bream and a few minute perch for a weight of 4lbs 13ozs. Jamie Moore again had the largest bream though, with quite a few hand-sized skimmers boosting his weight to 4lbs 9ozs. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the match was the two good perch caught by Sarah Barker from peg 16, with fish of 15ozs and 12ozs backed up with a few better roach and a couple of small skimmers giving her 3lbs 5ozs.

Prizes were also presented for the heaviest bream, roach and perch. Jamie again won the prize in the bream category, and Sarah Barker winning the perch (15ozs) and roach (5ozs) categories.

One of our senior members (Maurice Jenkinson) has donated a new shield for the Junior Competitions Specimen Fish over the 4 match series. We decided to award this on the basis of the percentage of the current British Record weights for each species. Jamie Moore’s 3lbs 7ozs bream caught in the Holiday Trophy match at the end of September narrowly beating Sarah Barker’s 15ozs perch into second place.

Thanks to the generosity of several members we have the beginnings of a viable fishing library. I have acquired about 40 DVDs and video tapes, 50 books and several hundred back copies of magazines and I will be running a library session on the second and fourth Monday evenings each month. DVDs, videos and books will be available for loan from one session to the next, which should give you ample opportunity to watch them. The magazines will be available for you to take away without having to return them, although if you do bring them back after you have read them I am sure other members will also find them useful and enjoyable.

Finally, a bit of “stuff” that your parents need to know about.

To comply with our insurance requirements,  rule 28 in the Members Handbook should have read as follows:

28.   Junior members under the age of 14 years must be accompanied by a parent or a guardian or a full member, when fishing any of the fisheries.

Please ensure that you follow this rule.
